Civics Education: The Premier Civil Right of the 21st Century

Chief Judge Royce C. Lamberth, of the District of Columbia, conducts civic education programs in his courtroom to bring a realistic dimension to what students from across the nation are learning in the classroom.

Education has been called “the civil right of the 21st Century.” Federal courts have played a pivotal role in establishing this right. In Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court said: “Education is the key to good citizenship. In school, children learn cultural values ... and learn to be successful in life. It is doubtful that any child can succeed in life if denied an education. Education is a right that must be made available to all on equal terms.” Students can bring to life the contemporary concepts in Brown v. Board of Education by re-enacting the roles of the key players in the case as it has an impact on young people today.
