Federal Courts Snapshot: Bankruptcy Filings Creep Up After Fall
Total monthly bankruptcy filings in the federal courts were 133,707 in July
of 2005. They rose to 630,402 by October of 2005, and fell to 14,521 by November
2005. The drop in bankruptcy filings occurred with the implementation of the
Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005. Most of the
Act’s provisions went into effect on October 17, 2005. Bankruptcy filings are
creeping up slowly, with June’s monthly filings totaling 54,734.
