Gavel Passed in Ninth Circuit
On November 30, 2007, Chief Judge Mary Schroeder passed the gavel to her
successor, Judge Alex Kozinski, in ceremonies at the James R. Browning U.S.
Courthouse in San Francisco. Schroeder, who was chief judge of the U.S. Courts
of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit for seven years, was the first woman to lead
the circuit. Kozinski, who has served 22 years on the Ninth Circuit, becomes the
circuit’s 10th chief judge since Congress created the position in 1948.
