Bankruptcy Filings Down 12 Percent in Calendar Year 2013

In calendar year 2013, there was a 12 percent drop in cases filed in federal bankruptcy courts. During the 12-month period ending December 31, 2013, 1,071,932 bankruptcy cases were filed, down from the 1,221,091 bankruptcy cases filed in calendar year 2012. The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts today released these and the following statistics:

  • Business and non-business bankruptcy filings for the 12-month period ending December 31, 2013. (Table F-2, Business and Nonbusiness Commenced by Chapter),
  • 2012 and 2013 Bankruptcy Cases Commenced, Terminated and Pending (Table F),
  • 2014 first quarter filings (Table F-2, 3-Month) and filings by month for October 2013, November 2013, and December 2013 (Tables F-2 by Month), and
  • Bankruptcy filings by county (Report F-5A).
