The daily cost of keeping someone imprisoned in a federal Bureau of Prisons facility was $70.75 in fiscal year 2008, and $65.25 in a community correction center. By comparison, the daily cost of supervision by federal probation officers was $10.23.
The annual, per-inmate cost of imprisonment was $25,894.50 in a BOP facility, and $23,881.50 in a community correction center. The annual cost of supervision by federal probation officers was $3,743.23. Supervision by pretrial services officers cost $2,229.30 per defendant last fiscal year.
The Bureau of Prisons provided the figures for the cost of imprisonment and community correction center placement. The cost of supervision is calculated using the current work measurement formula, probation/pretrial services officer salary costs, law enforcement account obligations, and miscellaneous operating expenses.
