15 New Authorized Judgeships Come into Being

Fifteen new district judgeships (eight permanent and seven temporary) became effective July 15. The judgeships were created by The 21st Century Department of Justice Appropriation Authorization Act, P.L. 107-273.

As a result, the total number of authorized district judgeships nationwide has increased to 680 (667 permanent and 13 temporary). The new temporary judgeships are authorized for 10 years after the confirmation date of the judges filling the positions.

The permanent judgeships created by the act are

  • one in the Western District of North Carolina;
  • two in the Western District of Texas; and
  • five in the Southern District of California.

The temporary judgeships created by the act are

  • one in the Western District of North Carolina;
  • one in the Eastern District of Texas;
  • one in the District of Arizona;
  • one in the Central District of California;
  • one in the District of New Mexico;
  • one in the Northern District of Alabama; and
  • one in the Southern District of Florida.
