Federal Judiciary Seeking 58 New Judgeships
|
The Judicial Conference of the United States, which sets policy for the federal judiciary, is recommending that Congress create 58 new Article III judgeships - 11 in the court of appeals and 47 in the district courts. In the courts of appeals, the Conference is seeking creation of nine permanent judgeships and two temporary judgeships. (A temporary judgeship is one for which a future judgeship vacancy may not be filled, thereby reducing the number of authorized judgeships for a given court.) One permanent judgeship each is sought in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and Sixth Circuit. Two permanent judgeships are sought for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. And five permanent judgeships and two temporary judgeships are sought for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In the district courts, the Conference is seeking creation of 30 permanent judgeships and 17 temporary judgeships. It also is asking Congress to convert four temporary judgeships into permanent judgeships.
