Federal Judges’ Compensation In January 2003, the National Commission on the Public Service found that "judicial salaries are the most egregious example of the failure of federal compensation policies." The commission found that federal judges' salaries lagged significantly behind those of top law school deans, senior law professors and top executives in large non-profit organizations. The salaries of senior lawyers in large law firms were not used as comparisons because they are so much higher than those of federal judges. Today, the annual salary of the chief justice of the United States is $203,000. The annual salary for the Supreme Court's eight associate justices is $194,300. Federal appellate judges earn $167,600 and district judges earn $158,000. Bankruptcy judges and full-time magistrate judges are paid $145,452 annually. |
