Bankruptcy Filings Inch Up in Quarter

Bankruptcy filings in the federal courts for the 3-month period of January 1, 2007-March 31, 2007 were the highest of any quarter in the 12-month period ending March 31, 2007, totaling 193,641. This was a 66 percent increase when compared to the 116,771 filings in the 3-month period ending March 31, 2006.

In the 12-month period ending March 31, 2007, 695,575 bankruptcy cases were filed in federal courts. This was a 61 percent drop in filings compared to filings in the 12-month period ending March 31, 2006, when bankruptcy cases totaled 1,794,795.
