Through the Conference of Chief Justices (CCJ), the highest judicial officers of the states meet and discuss ways in which to improve the administration of justice and the organization and operation of state courts and judicial systems. CCJ President, Chief Justice Margaret Marshall, talks about the organization and its interaction with the federal court system.

 

Leadership on Senate subcommittees whose jurisdiction includes the federal courts has been set.

 

The First, Third, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, and the Eleventh Circuits, are using Real Simple Syndication (RSS) to deliver web content directly to interested parties, eliminating the usual e-mail notification.

 

Four innovative IT projects for the federal courts provide capabilities not currently available through a national IT product and involve collaboration between two or more courts.

 

With the Omnibus Appropriations Bill for FY 2009, the Judiciary finally received funding for this year. Here's a look at where the FY 2009 money goes in the federal court system, and at the Judiciary's FY 2010 request.

 

The New Jersey district court hosted Attorney Electronic Filing Forums in January and February, extending invitations to all registered CM/ECF system filers and their staff. The forums were so popular, the 400 available spots were filled in one day.

 

According to a new report issued by the U.S. Sentencing Commission (USSC), the proportion of federal offenders receiving alternatives to prison sentences has decreased while the proportion of federal offenders sentenced to prison has increased.

 

Courthouse construction projects will receive 80 percent of the $300 million provided for the construction of federal buildings. In addition, several hundred million dollars are provided for full and partial modernization projects in almost 100 court facilities.

 

With the 2009 increase in the basic pay for Executive Schedule employees, the ceiling on outside earned income for federal judges also increased in 2009.

 

Seventy-five district courts have signed on to offer potential jurors a webpage where they can complete questionnaires and access information on when to report for jury duty.

 

Justice Sandra Day OConnor joined court officials in the Thomas F. Eagleton Courthouse in St. Louis, Missouri, at the grand opening of the courts Judicial Learning Center.
