Judge Sonia Sotomayor became the 111th Justice of the Supreme Court on August 8. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. administered the Constitutional Oath to Sotomayor in a private ceremony in the Justices Conference Room attended by members of her family. Immediately afterwards, Roberts administered the Judicial Oath in the East Conference Room before a small gathering of Sotomayors family and friends. A formal investiture ceremony will take place on September 8, at a special sitting of the Court.

Sotomayor was nominated by President Obama to fill the seat vacated by Justice David H. Souter. Her nomination was confirmed by the Senate on August 6, 2009.

Sotomayor has served as a federal judge since 1992, when she was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. She was elevated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1997.
