Costs of Incarceration and Supervision

imageWhen determining whether to impose a fine, and the amount, time of payment, and method of payment of a fine, the court considers the expected costs to the government of any imprisonment, supervised release, or probation component of the sentence. Costs for imprisonment and placement in a Community Corrections Center are provided by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Costs of supervision by probation officers is provided by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, Office of Probation and Pretrial Services. The cost is calculated using the work measurement formula, the average salary and benefits for a probation officer, the cost of treatment conditions, and operating expenses.
