Exploring the Moderating Effects of Mental Illness on Parole Release Decisions

Volume 75 Number 1
Date:
June 2011
Abstract:

The author explores potential differential treatment of inmates with mental illness in parole release decisions by testing whether the presence of a mental illness moderates the relationships among criminal risk factors and release decisions. Results suggest that parole board members are exercising considerable discretion in their release decisions above and beyond consideration of criminal risk factors.
