Making the Conversation a Little Easier for Probation and Parole Officers: Using Motivational Interviewing to Discuss Client Suicidal Ideation and Attempts

Abstract:

Suicidal ideation, preparation, and attempts may be formally assessed at intake, but during routine visits POs may avoid the topic due to a lack of comfort or skill regarding how to do so. The goal in discussing suicide is not to provide treatment but to motivate clients to seek help with local providers. Here, the authors suggest the use of Motivational Interviewing (MI), an evidence-based communication style, as both a framework and a tool that can further support POs in addressing client suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
