In October 2011, Judge Thomas F. Hogan became the eighth Director of the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. He succeeded James C. Duff, who served as Director from July 2006 to September 2011. Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. described Hogan as "one of our nation's most distinguished judges," who "will bring extraordinary experience and insight to the position by virtue of his prior service to the judiciary."
Hogan has been a federal judge since 1982, when he was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He is a former Chief Judge of that court and served as chair of the Executive Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States and as a member of the Board of the Federal Judicial Center.
Chief Justice Roberts described Duff as "a dedicated public servant who led the Administrative Office with great skill," whose "work has always reflected his deep commitment to ensuring that the federal judiciary has the administrative support to fulfill its vital role under the Constitution." In accepting the appointment, Judge Hogan emphasized the need to continue that important work and the commitment to ensuring that the Administrative Office maintains its "tradition of excellence in its service to judges, court staff, and the public."
