Overview of the Position: The Sentencing Resource Counsel Project (SRC) provides advice to support the Federal Defender Sentencing Guidelines Committee in developing and conveying the collective views and comments of the federal defenders to the U.S. Sentencing Commission as required by 28 U.S.C. § 994(o). SRC formulates sentencing policy with the Defenders Guidelines Committee and the Defenders Legislative Committee, interacts with the Commission and other agencies and organizations, facilitates communication between committees and federal defenders, and provides sentencing litigation support. SRC tracks emerging sentencing issues, circuit splits, and other issues that arise relevant to sentencing, including probation practices, pending legislation, and developments in social science. SRC also provides training assistance related to federal sentencing law, policy, and practice.

Position Description

SRC is a highly-collaborative, mission-based project. A clearly demonstrated aptitude for excellence in federal sentencing practice and policy, commitment to indigent defense, and reputation for personal integrity are required for this position. Though each team member possesses broad knowledge of federal sentencing issues, this position will focus on the federal sentencing guidelines and commenting on the work of the United States Sentencing Commission. The ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and outside organizations is required.

SRC is one of several national projects that are part of the Defender Services program. SRC are federal defender employees of the Office of the Federal Defender for the District of Arizona (FDO AZ). The selected candidate will be a federal defender employee of FDO AZ, and the position will be supervised by the SRC Director.

Requirements: 
You must (1) be a graduate of an accredited law school and have admission and good standing in a state bar; (2) have extensive experience in federal sentencing as well as thorough familiarity with federal sentencing policy; (3) have the ability to draft policy-related comments; (4) have excellent research and writing skills, good communication skills, and the ability to work independently from a remote work site. You must be able to travel, as it is a necessary part of the job. Experience providing legal training, particularly on federal sentencing, is preferred. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory background investigation including an FBI name and fingerprint check and an IRS tax check.

Benefits

Salary and Benefits. SRC employees enjoy experience-based salaries. The starting salary range is between $75,783 - $191,800 (salary range based on Phoenix locality). SRC also offers generous benefits, including health and life insurance, retirement, and the Thrift Savings Plan. Salary is payable only by Electronic Funds Transfer (direct deposit). Offer of employment is subject to the availability of funds.
