Volume 66 Number 3
Date:
December 2002
Abstract:

Over a century and a half ago, reformer John Augustus launched the idea of the probation system in America. The author analyzes Augustus' own 1852 "Report of the Labors of John Augustus for the Last Ten Years, in Aid of the Unfortunate," to locate the principles of selection and methods of supervision used by Augustus in his unpaid role of standing bail for and supervising the rehabilitation of certain offenders.
