Clinical Versus Actuarial Judgments in Criminal Justice Decisions: Should One Replace the Other?

The authors argue that, while there is a place for human judgment in making risk decisions, over-reliance on human judgment may undermine the accuracy of risk assessment, because probation and parole officers may "concentrate on information that is demonstrably not predictive of offender behavioral outcomes."
