The authors survey 107 persons under supervision by United States probation officers in the Eastern and Western districts of North Carolina within the first 60 days of supervision and again six months later. The aim was to assess opinions of their supervision experience, with specific attention to how well offenders thought their officer used Staff Training Aimed at Reducing Rearrest (STARR) skills such as active listening and feedback; effective use of authority; problem solving; applying the cognitive model; effective reinforcement; and effective disapproval.
