Creating a Model Correctional Officer Training Academy: Implications from a National Survey

The authors undertook a national study of 44 states' correctional officer training as a first step toward creating a blueprint of what a model "Correctional Officer Training Academy" would entail. Beyond skills needed to maintain safety and security and perform duties effectively, the model might include continuing education and training in management styles needed to build officer legitimacy, knowledge of how to manage special populations, the RNR approach to offender treatment, and promotion of officer wellness.
