Bankruptcy Filings Fall 2 Percent
Bankruptcy filings in the 12-month period ending December 31, 2018, fell 2 percent, compared with bankruptcy cases filed in calendar year 2017. According to newly released data, 773,418 cases were filed in 2018, compared with 789,020 in the previous year.
Bankruptcy filings have steadily declined since reaching a peak in 2010. The number of bankruptcy filings is the lowest for any calendar year since 2006.
The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts also released the following statistics:
- Business and non-business bankruptcy filings for the 12-month period ending December 31, 2018. (Table F-2, Business and Nonbusiness Commenced by Chapter),
- 2017 and 2018 Bankruptcy Cases Commenced, Terminated and Pending (Table F),
- Three-month filings for October-December 2018 (Table F-2, 3-Month) and filings by month for October 2018, November 2018, and December 2018 (Tables F-2 by Month),
- Bankruptcy filings by county (Table F-5A).
