Early Termination: Shortening Federal Supervision Terms Without Endangering Public Safety

In the U.S. federal system, courts can grant early termination of supervision for people on federal probation or supervised release under certain circumstances. The author examined people whose supervision terms were successfully closed via early or regular termination from FY 2014 through 2023, finding moderate correlations with risk profile. Factors such as supervision time imposed and district of case closure had the greatest bearing on early termination, and early terming did not threaten community safety.
