Status of Bankruptcy Judgeships - Judicial Business 2012

As of September 30, 2012, a total of 350 bankruptcy judgeships were authorized and funded. The total one year earlier had been 351, but under the terms of the authorizing legislation, a bankruptcy judgeship in the Southern District of New York was eliminated in March 2012 upon the retirement of a bankruptcy judge in that district. Of the remaining 350 judgeships, 334 were filled and 16 were vacant (compared to 17 vacant positions among 351 judgeships on the same date in 2011). In addition to judges in authorized positions, 38 retired bankruptcy judges who had been recalled by various circuits were providing service to the Judiciary at the end of 2012.
