Position Description

The court has nominated Michael G. Tierney to fill a U.S. Magistrate Judge position in our Fresno, California courthouse. Judge Nominee Tierney’s appointment is subject to his successful completion of a background investigation. If successful, the court anticipates he will enter on duty on or shortly after Jan. 5, 2026.

Judge Nominee Tierney is seeking applicants for a term law clerk position. The availability of the position is subject to his successful appointment. The incumbent would support Judge Nominee Tierney by conducting extensive research and writing on a wide range of matters arising in federal litigation. The incumbent also would assist with managing the judges’ caseloads and preparing for case-related hearings, conferences, and trials.

An initial two-year term of appointment is preferred. The term may be extended for up to two additional years by mutual agreement. Term law clerks are appointed for a defined period of employment and an individual’s service as a term law clerk is limited to a maximum of four years to any combination of federal judges.

Applicants must be available for a starting date of employment on or shortly after January 5, 2026. The selected applicant will be expected to perform work in our Fresno courthouse. Subject to Judge Nominee Tierney’s approval, the selected candidate may be authorized limited, occasional telework.
