Position Description
The judicial law clerk serves as a legal advisor to the Honorable Nicholas P. Mizell, U.S. Magistrate Judge, and is responsible for managing a docket of civil and criminal cases, researching issue of law, drafting orders and participating in court proceedings. The caseload in the jurisdiction is heavy, and the types of cases presented are varied and often involve novel issues of law. There is daily interaction with the judge and other law clerks concerning legal and court-related issues. Judicial law clerks are also responsible for some administrative duties.
Qualifications
The applicant must be a law school graduate at the time of appointment and should have academic standing within the top fifteen percent of his or her class; possess excellent research, writing, and communication skills; and be of good character and maturity. A willingness to work long hours and under deadlines is also required. Active participation in law review and mock trial or moot court is preferred. Bar membership and post-graduate experience in litigation and as a law clerk are also preferred.
