Position Description
The duties of the position are demanding and wide-ranging, involving both civil and criminal case responsibilities:
- Conduct most preliminary proceedings in criminal cases.
- Trial and disposition of misdemeanor cases.
- Conduct mediation and settlement proceedings in civil cases.
- Conduct various other pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings on delegation of the Judges of the District Court.
- Trial and disposition of civil cases upon consent of the litigants. The basic authority of a U.S. Magistrate Judge is specified in 28 U.S.C. § 636.
