Overview of the Position The Judicial Conference of the United States has authorized the appointment of a full-time U.S. magistrate judge for the Western District of Virginia at Abingdon. Position Description

The duties of the position are demanding and wide-ranging and will include: 1) conducting most preliminary proceedings in criminal cases; 2) trying and disposing of misdemeanor cases; 3) conducting various pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings on delegation from a district judge; 4) trying and disposing of civil cases upon consent of the litigants; and 5) performing such duties, administrative or otherwise, as may be delegated by the district judges. The basic authority of a U.S. magistrate judge is specified in 28 U.S.C. § 636.
