Position Description

The Middle District of Florida seeks a full-time Courtroom Clerk in the Orlando division to serve the Court in its mission to provide fair and impartial justice to all. The ideal candidate possesses excellent interpersonal, computer, analytical, organizational, communication, and multi-tasking skills, along with a strong work ethic and resilience.

The Courtroom Clerk manages all aspects of criminal and civil cases pending in the Middle District of Florida by scheduling trials, hearings and other events; monitoring case filings by using reports and information from the automated case management system; preparing files for the judge’s use in court; drafting judgments and other orders for the judge’s approval; docketing judgments, orders and notices; and working with the judge and chambers staff to ensure cases are progressing smoothly and efficiently.

The Courtroom Clerk attends court sessions and assists with the orderly flow of proceedings. This includes arranging the courtroom, assuring the presence of all necessary participants, ensuring courtroom technology is working properly, managing exhibits, assisting witnesses and jurors, maintaining courtroom decorum, taking notes of proceedings and rulings, and preparing and docketing minute entries for the record. 

Additionally, the Courtroom Clerk performs various clerical functions to support the effective coordination and administration of court operations, including quality control reviews to ensure the accuracy and compliance of submitted documents.

The Courtroom Clerk acts as a liaison between the clerk's office, other court agencies, the bar, and the judge, and serves as a primary source of information about courtroom equipment and the court’s schedule.

Qualifications

Three years at a progressively responsible administrative level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Requires a professional, cooperative, and congenial demeanor at all times and strong administrative, organizational, analytical, and writing ability. Requires solid computer skills, preferably with Word and Windows. Bachelor's degree preferred.

Starting salary adjustments prioritize prior federal service, with some recognition of relevant work experience and prior salary history. Applicants with prior federal court experience may be eligible for a starting salary above the minimum. Starting salary at the CL 27 requires prior Courtroom Clerk experience. Promotion potential from CL 26 to the CL 27 level without further competition after one year.
