Position Description

The Receptionist serves as the first point of contact for the office and provides professional administrative support to attorneys and staff. Duties include answering and screening multiple telephone lines; receiving and directing calls from clients, incarcerated defendants, court personnel, attorneys, and members of the public; greeting and assisting visitors; monitoring office access; and providing general information regarding staff availability, court schedules, and office procedures.

The Receptionist receives, routes, and distributes incoming mail, deliveries, facsimiles, and other correspondence; coordinates courier and express mail services; and delivers legal documents for filing with the Clerk’s Office, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and other federal agencies as appropriate. The Receptionist prepares and formats correspondence, memoranda, reports, and other documents; assists with data entry and statistical reporting; operates office equipment and communication systems; and provides administrative assistance to support daily office operations.

The successful candidate must be able to work effectively in a legal environment while maintaining professionalism, diplomacy, and confidentiality. The full position description is available on the website.

Candidates must demonstrate strong customer service skills, initiative, reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize multiple assignments while working both independently and as part of a team. The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups, analyze routine problems, apply established policies and procedures, and provide practical solutions in support of office operations. Extra consideration will be given to candidates fluent in Spanish.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of receptionist, a person must be a high school graduate or equivalent and possess the requisite general and specialized experience required for the position. Higher education may be substituted for experience in accordance with applicable qualification standards. Applicants must possess strong organizational skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion, and the ability to maintain confidentiality regarding attorney-client privilege and sensitive legal matters. Proficiency with personal computers, word processing applications, and standard office equipment is required. Experience working in a legal environment or a position involving significant public contact is preferred. Employment is subject to a satisfactory background investigation.

Employee Benefits

Starting salary will be commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the applicant, within the applicable range for the Judiciary Salary Plan (JSP), $40,736 - $65,599. The position is in the excepted service and does not carry the tenure rights of the competitive Civil Service. The position includes the same benefits as other federal government employees, including participation in health and life insurance programs, retirement benefits, and the Thrift Savings Plan. Salary is payable only by Electronic Funds Transfer (direct deposit).
